Do you ever check your pants before you put them on? If you don’t, perhaps you should start…
I’m not talking about clean pants fresh out of your closet. I’m talking about that pair of after-work jeans that only gets a couple hours of wear a day. You get home, you take off your work clothes, and step into those jeans that were lying on the floor right next to the bed, right where you dumped them as you stripped off and crawled into bed. I have such a pair of jeans. And I never check them; even though I know better.
Several times over the years I have doned my after work jeans and then gone off on an errand or out to the movies and paid the price of not checking, and a few weeks ago was one of those times. I had driven to the LCBO with my girlfriend Sarah and had gotten out of the car and started across the parking lot. Sarah, following behind, asked “Whats that coming out of your pant leg?” I look down to see the some of the grey material and familiar waistband of the boxers I had worn the day before. In my haste (or through lack of attention, I had donned my jeans with yesterday’s pair of boxers still inside. After making it down 5 flights of stairs and to my car, they had waited until I was in a public place to make their appearance. Flustered, I balled them up in a fist, moved hastily back to my car, and flung them in behind the drivers seat. Moments later I had forgotten all about it.
Days later when cleaning out the car, I found those boxers, and realized with horror that Sarah’s co-worker, who gets a ride with her to work every morning, had been sitting beside them for more than a week. Being the nice guy he is, he had said nothing the entire time. Dear god.
Like I had mentioned before, this is not the first time this has happened to me. Usually it is just a sock or two, but every now and then a pair of boxers pops out. Come to think of it, all my unpaired socks may have lost their partner that way…
