I had been looking forward to it all summer. It was going to be fantastic, and it would happen without any problems. My parents were not thrilled about it. I had had some issues attempting the same sort of thing before, and almost died as a result. But, I felt I had a plan that would get me through it okay. And it did. And it was amazing.
I was going to get into my little Ford escort, and drive the 1600km to my parents place. All by myself. There were a couple times before where I had tried to do long distance driving and fallen asleep at the wheel. The first time I was with my family, driving up to Thunder Bay and I nodded off for only a split second and started to veer into oncoming traffic. I woke up in time to get over without any collision, but I was so badly shaken I just about threw up. The second, I was doing a midnight drive back from Ottawa and woke up on the other side of a concrete medium. I still don’t know how the hell that happened. So you can understand why my folks were a little worried. But I had my plan.
I was pretty sure that the reason I had gotten so tired both times is that I had not had enough sleep, and that I was trying to do it all in one go. I figured that if I took my time, got out, smelled the roses, and napped when ever I felt tired, I would be just fine. And I was. And stopping to smell the roses? One of the best ideas I have ever had.
On all the drives to and from Thunder Bay I have made, I was either asleep, or intently watching the rode to avoid accidents with asshole dirvers or huge-ass logging trucks loaded with sticks of death. I never got to see the sights, and that bothered me. I knew I was missing out, and holy shit, was I ever! I’ll get a picture set up from my trip down, and some video clips I made, so you can see for yourself. I hope I get to make the trip again someday, either by myself, or with a close friend and take mroe than two days so that I can spend even more time exploring and taking in the beauty of the northern shores of Superior.
