My new job as a computer tech is going well. The staff seem to like me and appreciate my work, and despite the fact that I received no training, and the previous tech had left a week before I got there, leaving a mess, I have caught up and am now on top of things.
Most of what I do is not that challenging. Run a virus scan, get rid of spyware, do a restore. But every so often a computer comes in with a challenge and I absolutely love it. There is nothing like the slight panic induced by a problem I don’t know how to solve, and the faith in a customer has that you will make everything better. It is stressful, but I seem to run awesome on that kind of stress, blazing through 8, sometimes 9 hours of work without stopping. I can snack in my room, so on busy days I just don’t stop. On those days, when I leave at five, and all the work has been done and my room is clean, I feel great.
A number of repeat customers have come in, speaking of how Dan (my predecessor) helped them out last time, and what he did for them and blah, blah, blah. Then they ask where Dan is and I get to tell them that I am his replacement! One lady, who had developed a trusting, professional relationship with Dan asked me where he had gone, and I told her. She then asked me why I should stay with my store, and not Dan’s, and if I was capable of the same level of service. I told her that I’m just as good, if not better. My straight face and honest tone didn’t convey any cockiness, and she accepted my answer. One customer kept!
On a side note; to the customers who bring in their computers for a ‘dusting’. DO IT MORE OFTEN.
