There are times, as I’m sure you all have experienced, when the only thing stopping you from doing something is yourself. It’s as if there is a mental barrier that stops you from doing what it is you want to do.
Sometimes your memory fails you, and you just can’t answer that exam question. You know you know it, but you just can’t get at the answer. Sometimes it’s inexperience. You just don’t know how to do what you want to do, but you know, with a little time, you will figure it out. However, more often than not, I find it is fear that is the root of that mental barrier.
Its frustrating, fear. Frequently, the fear is an irrational one. You know, logically, that you have nothing to fear, but you fear anyways. Its powerful, but ultimately beatable.
I’ve included a video of me breaking a mental barrier of fear. I have a fear of heights, fear of seaweed, and a fear of breaking my neck. All of these made attempting a back flip off a 12 foot high diving board into a seaweedy lake very difficult (yes, 12 feet is not much, go ahead and laugh).
