I like turkeys. They taste good for one. Roast turkey, turkey sandwiches, turkey burgers, etc. But my biggest reason for liking turkeys is how stupid they are.
For an animal that should so obviously be afraid of humans, they often are not. Sure, if you run at one it will run away, but if you don’t move too quickly you can get pretty close. I also see them congregating out in the open alot. If i was a hunted bird, i wouldn’t congregate, let alone out in the open. The greatest fun however, comes with chasing them.
Pulling inot camp the other day to do a last bit of cleaning, I drove up to a group of turkeys. They started walking away from my car and into the bush, not to concerned with the fact that I could easily run them over. Thinking myself lucky for such an opportunity, I hurredly parked my car and burst out of the door running full tilt at the buggers. The turkeys exploded into hilarious action. Some just ran as fast as they could, tripping over branches littering the forest floor, or crashing into each other in their haste to get away. Others took flight, hitting trees and falling to the ground, only to try again. Ten seconds into the chase I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breath so I watched the remaining birds run off and went back to my car. I’m going to miss turkeys. There do not seem to be any in Thunder Bay.
