Software Engineering Is Like…

I know quite a few people, as I’m sure many of you do. The longer you live, the more people you tend to meet. I’m only 22, but I’ve lived long enough to be able to say that I know quite a few people and mean it. Of those many, however, very few know what software engineering and development is all about. Even I don’t fully understand what it is, and I’m majoring in software engineering.

An article popped up on Digg a few days ago and it got me thinking. I can use metaphors to explain what software engineering (SE) is! Everybody knows how to do something well, and if I can equate SE and development to something people know, then maybe they can have an idea about what it is I, and many others, do. It will be my mission, over the next few articles, so explain SE by comparing it with some popular or well known activities. Maybe by the end I’ll finally be able to answer somebody clearly when they ask me “What are you in school for?”.

“Link” is the nickname given to me by my parents. The rest of the world uses Tap.
