Wasting Time The Awesome Way

In about 10 hours I have to write a midterm for my Design II class. If I had done what I planned, I would have finished studying hours ago and even had time for a movie before going to bed at a decent time and getting an extended and much needed sleep. What I ended up doing isn’t even close to that, but I’m quite happy it turned out the way it did. Compared to the studious evening I had planned, it could seem like a waste of time, but if my evening was wasted, I should waste more of them.

It started with an invitation to my future roommates (Andrew and Paul) to stay for supper after we met with our landlord around 6 pm. I was late getting there because the washing machine at the laundromat lied to me. I figured supper would give us a chance to talk things over one more time. They had fed me numerous times, and I felt it only fair that I return the generosity they had showed me. After meeting with the landlord, we went down to my place and I started cooking. As I cooked I swore up a storm because of an incident involving a the bank. Fun was had at my freaking out, and as I yelled into the phone my roommate (Sarah) and a mutual friend of ours (Debbie) showed up. I was hoping for this because I was pretty certain that my future roommates and my current one would get along pretty well. I was right.

We chatted for hours. Sarah and Debbie together are definitely a fun combination, and the first hour or so of conversation was filled with laughs and smiles. Debbie had to leave eventually, but the good conversation didn’t end there. Talk continued, mostly between Andrew and Sarah, being the chatty types they are, with the odd addition coming from Paul or I. More laughs and some interesting topics covered. Then it was Andrew’s time to leave, after a quick shower of course. But did it end there? Not at all!

Conversation mellowed a bit as Paul and Sarah chatted. I ended up sharing some stories of ridiculousness, but for the most part it was just more of the same flowing conversation as before. Time kept passing and it didn’t seem like things were going to end. I had given up worrying a long time ago about studying. Conversation did come to an end however, as the three of us realised that we had to get to get to bed at some point. Sarah had to work the next day, and Paul had the gym and class, and I my midterm. The conversation ended smoothly and Paul left. It was almost 11 pm

It was almost 11 pm then; we had talked for almost five hours. I brewed some coffee too fuel my late-night studying, and as Sarah and I stood in the kitchen, we agreed that we should gather again, the four of us. We seemed to mingle well. I certainly thought so. I got allot out of all we talked about, tons more than I would have if I had spent the time studying.

If you didn’t know the material the night before the exam, no amount of cramming would help.

Your evening of frivolity was probably a better use of your time. A relaxed mind functions better.
