TOTD: Vary Your Friends: Multiple Types for Multiple Needs

Sure, its awesome to have that one super awesome best friend. The one you’ve known for longer than you can remember, and who always stuck around, despite how ridiculous you got. But that one person can’t be everybody for you, and its the same reason why one type of friend just isn’t enough. It is important to have varied friends for the same reason it is important to have biodiversity; different times require different characteristics. Here is a list of some of my friend types, and what they do for me:

  • The Support: This type always has your back. If you need somebody to tell you you are awesome, this person has umpteen different ways to do it. If you are struggling with a problem, and need somebody to lean on while you push your way through, this person is there with an arm under you, for the whole time, any time. They play the rock, and they are damn good at it.
  • The Straight and Level: This type doesn’tbeat around the bush. Some times a clean-cut answer is needed; the plain and simple truth. They don’t hesitate to cut you down when you grow to tall, or give you clear reasons to move out of that funk you sometimes get yourself into. When you are blind to what is important, they come along and make you see.
  • The Teddy Bear: Everybody needs some physical comfort sometimes. The service this friend provides can range from on-tap hugs to quality snuggles to *ahem* rejuvenating lovin’s. When all you need and want is somebody to actually be there, they always are.
  • The Crazy Bastard: This friend really shines when things just suck, or some random, crazy-ass fun is needed. They never hesitate to plunge head first into the fun, and are extremely adept at getting you to come along for the ride. Sometimes you just need to let go and forget about all the bullshit, and this person is ready and willing to help you out. Its helpful if this friend isn’t a complete fool as well.
  • The “Been There, Done That” Elder: One of my favourites is the friend who is older. I’m not talking a few months or years. I’m talking a generation or more. They have been around long enough and experienced enough that they can give you a perspective on almost any situation using their super-duper 20/20 hindsight. Nothing beats avoiding something crappy like taking advice from somebody who has already faced it, and lived. Just make sure this friend is more wise than bitter and jaded.

Now I know that you can’t label any one person any one thing. They can fit into more than one category, and by no means is the list I’ve provided a definitive or exhasutive one. But I’m pretty sure, if you think about it, any friend you name will fitinto one category more than the other

Do you have each of these in your life? Or maybe you have some other type?
