All About Zoe

I have a dear friend, and her name is Zoë. Well, actually her name is Sarah, but for
this blog it will be Zoë because much of what I will say about her is more
about ‘Zoë’ then about ‘Sarah’. If you don’t follow, that’s okay.

Zoë is the greatest person in the world. That is what she likes to think, so I let
her. No harm in it really. My opinion of her is that she is a truly genuine
person, who is adept at making me laugh when she gets angry at my stubborn
stupidity (“why the hell were you way out there Tap?” “I had to
dong the buoy!”), and makes me feel special when she runs up to give me a
hug the odd time I see her on campus. She is the sole inventor of several
special times during the day that start with “nap-” such as nap
o’clock and nap-thirty. I enjoy those times as much as she does, and am very
happy to have shared a few with her.

That is a very brief taste of the girl who is Zoë. I love her like a sister. Now for
some important back-story so those of you who are reading are not confused as
to why I would be writing about her and how she is connected to my life.

Strangely enough, I first met Zoë in Sunday school, back when I was FIVE! Why strange?
Well, Zoë was not really Zoë then, she was Sarah. And as it turns out, she
ended up an atheist and I an agnostic. I never got to know her very well, but definitely
found her intriguing, and I loved her long black hair (not sure if it was long
back then, but it sure is now). She went to a different elementary school, and
we saw very little of each other in high school. Two years into that stage of
my education I moved away.

Link to Zoë lost? Heavens no! We both attended the same camp every summer, and we both
now work there (in fact this summer will be our fifth, and hopefully our second
as two of the three ‘team leadership’). Working at camp is where Zoë is most
like Zoë, and working at camp is where I got to know her the most, especially
last summer, when we practically lived together for 4 months. Good times if you
can believe it!

During pre-camp when the kiddies are not there and the whole place is run by 4 people,
I was able to see Zoë in a stress free camp environment (such an environment is
liberating, let me tell you). She liked to nap, was inherently lazy, though
never to the point of annoying those of us more willing to work. She didn’t
care much about how she looked, not being one to fret about looks. It wasn’t
that she was unclean or dirty, she was just incredibly self-confident and right
there is where I will start the last portion of ‘All about Zoë’.

I mentioned at the very start that Zoë believes herself to be great. I’m not
saying she isn’t, but the girl lacks all modesty. However, she does it in a way
that is completely awesome because the effects of that high and mighty
self image do not lead to other people feeling like less of a person. It
actually puts you less at ease, because if you think about it, how comfortable
can you be around somebody who is not comfortable with themselves? She was part
of the LEADERSHIP program, and you sure as hell have to believe in yourself to
be a leader. This year she is HEAD leadership, and I could not be happier about
that, because being second in command to somebody who CAN command is never
a bad thing. It just works.

I look forward to spending another summer with the bold, opinionated,
and oh-so-relaxed wonderful person that is ZOE
